 Virginia and West Virginia

Driving through American farmlands you can still see these ghost images on the sides of barns. This one is in West Virginia. "Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco. Treat Yourself To The Best." Across 22 states, over 20,000 barns were painted as their advertising campaign in the 1890s. Barn owners would be paid to advertise and welcomed the life extending coat of paint. The campaign was so popular other brands followed in their footsteps. Barn ghost signs became protected landmarks in 1974.
